April 30, 2010, Newsletter Issue #161: I Used to Have a Problem (or "Tips From a Recovering Word Count-Aholic)

Tip of the Week

 Hi.

My name is Jeff Loquist...and I'm a word count-aholic.

"Hi Jeff"

I look around the room at the sad faces of other recovering addicts and I feel better knowing I am not alone.

There's Jen from New Haven over there on the couch. A fine copywriter in her own write (see how I did that?), Jen once wrote 60 pages of copy for an insurance website in a single weekend. Each article at slightly more than 500 words.

Oh. And that's Phil sitting cross-legged on the floor. He's the one with the slight twitch from trying to figure out what the perfect word count would be for his site and blog.

Who? Oh, that lady over there? The one with glowing skin and fresh expression? That's Rachael.

See...Rachael was a word count-aholic for more than five years. She used to stay up for days on end polishing her articles and often stuffing them with needless drivel because she was focusing on word count instead of worrying about the quality and message she was presenting through her copywriting efforts.

Man...look at her now.

Huh?

Oh...you want to know about me?

I will admit it. I too spent many nights adding filler to content in an attempt to get the perfect word count. Then one day I woke up and realized that instead of trying to fill a web page with text I needed to fill my readers with quality information.

There was no pill, my friend. I assure you. If you want to get this monkey off your back your just going to have to quit cold turkey.

Think you can do it?

Well, have a seat. There is never a better time to start the road to recovery then right now.
