May 28, 2010, Newsletter Issue #165: Blind Date Mentality Copywriting

Tip of the Week

It's the cliche bad date scene.

A beautiful woman sits down at the table with her blind date and from the moment their eyes meet the guy across the table can speak of nothing but how great "he" art.

Just like in life, where talking about yourself will get you no where. it is important to rememer when writing copy - whether it is for print or online - the reader really doesn't give a hoot about you.

People are selfish.

Whether they are searching for a new life partner or a new printer cartridge what they really want to know is how can the thing you're offering benefit them.

Relationships are never give and take when it comes to marketing.

They are give, give and give some more.

If you're not focusing on the consumer when creating your content or copy they will most likely get what they need from their next blind date.

So...how do you do this?

Avoid words that relate to you as much as possible. Limit the use of "we", "us", "our" and other selfish words. By doing this you will naturally gear your writing to the consumer and have a better chance of getting the conversion you are looking for.
