November 6, 2009, Newsletter Issue #137: How to Become a Better Writer

Tip of the Week

I have a friend who wants to write. She actually has an English degree. Unfortunately, this does not make someone a writer.

For that, there is only one thing you can do...

Write.

Contrary to what some people believe and even tell you, no one is born a writer. And my personal opinion is that all the education in the world will not help you. Sure, you can learn proper grammar, punctuation and other technical aspects of the art, but you will still not be a writer.

It doesn’t matter what your experience is behind the keyboard, in order to become a better writer you just have to write.

And then write some more. Even when you don’t feel like writing you need to write. This is especially true for wannabe Copywriters or even seasoned professionals. Unlike fiction writing, the world of Copywriting doesn’t care about whether you aren’t feeling artistic today.

A deadline is a deadline, and not meeting a deadline is a good way to build a bad reputation.

So I told her the same thing I tell anyone who asks me how they can become a writer:

No matter what you do, follow the advice from that blue fish from that movie about a fish that I’m afraid to mention because it’s by that company that doesn’t like people to use their likenesses...Just keep writing (or something like that).
